How to Nurture Your Subscribers (Branded & Branded Plus)
Getting email subscribers is great. Converting them into paying clients is better. Here's how to use your email sequence.
Your Pre-Written Email Sequence
If you purchased Branded or Branded Plus, you received 5-7 pre-written emails designed to educate subscribers and position you as the expert. Here's how to use them:
- Email 1: Immediately (welcome + download link)
- Email 2: Day 3 after signup
- Email 3: Day 7 after signup
- Email 4: Day 10 after signup
- Email 5: Day 14 after signup
- Your business name and contact information
- Links to your services or booking page
- Your personal stories or examples (optional but recommended)
- Which emails have the highest open rates?
- Which emails get the most clicks?
- Are people unsubscribing at any particular email?
Best Practices for Maximum Results
Make Your Lead Magnet Easy to Find
Don't hide your opt-in form. Feature it prominently:
- Use a popup (but only show it once per visitor)
- Add a banner at the top of your homepage
- Include it in your website header or navigation
- Mention it in your social media bios
Promote Consistently
Post about your lead magnet at least 2-3 times per week on social media. Use different angles:
- "Struggling with X? Download my free guide..."
- "Here's what you'll learn in my free [lead magnet name]..."
- "Just updated my free guide with new tips on..."
Track Your Numbers
Watch these metrics in your email platform:
- Conversion Rate: What percentage of website visitors sign up?
- Open Rate: Are people opening your welcome email?
- Click Rate: Are they clicking your download link?
- Unsubscribe Rate: Are you losing subscribers quickly?
Deliver Value Consistently
After your automated sequence ends, keep emailing your list:
- Weekly tips related to your industry
- Behind-the-scenes stories from your work
- Client success stories and testimonials
- Occasional promotions or special offers

Troubleshooting Common Issues
Problem: The download link in my welcome email doesn't work
Solution:
- If using Google Drive or Dropbox, make sure you set permissions to "Anyone with the link can view"
- Test the link in an incognito browser window - if it asks for login, permissions are wrong
- Make sure you copied the shareable link, not the file path from your computer
- If using your email platform's file storage, check that the file uploaded successfully and wasn't blocked due to size
Problem: People are signing up but not receiving the welcome email
Solution:
- Check your email platform's automation settings - make sure the welcome email is set to "Active" or "Published"
- Verify the trigger is set to "immediately upon subscription" not a delayed schedule
- Ask test subscribers to check their spam/junk folders
- Make sure your sender email is verified in your email platform (most require this)
- Check if your email platform has sending limits you've hit
Problem: My opt-in form won't embed on my website
Solution:
- Make sure you're pasting the embed code in an HTML block, not a text editor
- Some website builders (like Wix or Squarespace) require you to use their custom code sections - check their documentation
- If using WordPress, paste into a Custom HTML block, not a paragraph block
- Clear your browser cache and refresh the page
- Try using your email platform's hosted landing page URL instead of embedding
Problem: The opt-in form is showing but submissions aren't being recorded
Solution:
- Test the form yourself - does it show a confirmation message after you submit?
- Check your email platform's subscriber list - are ANY subscribers being added?
- Make sure the form is connected to the right email list/audience in your platform
- Verify there are no required fields missing from your form
- Check if your email platform's API connection is active (some platforms require this)
Problem: High unsubscribe rate after people download the lead magnet
Solution:
- Make sure your welcome email sets expectations about future emails (frequency, topics)
- Don't immediately hit them with a sales pitch - deliver value first
- Check that your email sequence matches what you promised in the opt-in form
- Space out your emails - don't send daily unless you promised daily content
- Make sure your "From Name" matches your business name so they recognize you
Problem: People say they can't open the PDF
Solution:
- Make sure you uploaded the PDF file, not a .pages, .docx, or other format
- Test the download yourself on both desktop and mobile
- Keep PDF file size under 10MB (compress if needed using free tools like SmallPDF)
- Make sure the PDF isn't password-protected
- Provide alternative download options (Google Drive, Dropbox) in case their email blocks attachments
Problem: Low conversion rate - lots of traffic but few signups
Solution:
- Make your opt-in form more visible (try a popup or banner instead of sidebar)
- Improve your headline - make it benefit-focused, not feature-focused
- Show a preview of what's inside the lead magnet (screenshot of first page or bullet points)
- Reduce required form fields - just ask for email, not name and phone and company
- Add social proof near the form ("Join 500+ [your industry] professionals")
- Make sure your CTA button is bold and clear ("Get My Free Guide" not "Submit")
Problem: Email sequence isn't sending automatically
Solution:
- Check that your automation workflow is "Active" or "Published" in your email platform
- Verify the delays between emails are set correctly (e.g., "3 days after subscription")
- Make sure each email in the sequence is set to "send" not "draft"
- Check if subscribers are entering the workflow - some platforms require triggers to be set up separately
- Look for error messages in your automation dashboard
Problem: Branded package didn't include my logo/colors
Solution:
- Check the email we sent requesting your branding information - did you reply with your logo and color codes?
- Make sure you sent logo files in high-resolution format (PNG or vector/AI files work best)
- Provide hex color codes for your brand colors (#000000 format)
- If you didn't receive the branding request email, check spam and email support@designerofcontent.com
Problem: Can't figure out how to upload the email sequence to my platform
Solution:
- Mailchimp: Go to Automations → Create → Custom → Add email triggers and delays
- ConvertKit: Go to Automations → New Sequence → Add emails with delays between each
- ActiveCampaign: Go to Automations → Create Automation → Use "Starts when contact subscribes" trigger
- If still stuck, email us with your platform name and we'll send specific instructions
Problem: My website is loading slower after adding the opt-in form
Solution:
- Use your email platform's popup instead of embedding if it's causing issues
- Don't use multiple popups or forms on the same page
- Make sure the form code is placed in the footer, not the header
- Check if your form has heavy images - optimize or remove them
- Consider using a lightweight alternative like a text link to a hosted landing page
Problem: The opt-in form looks fine on desktop but broken on mobile
Solution:
- Most email platforms provide responsive forms - make sure you selected the "mobile-friendly" option
- Test on your actual phone, not just browser mobile view
- Reduce form width if it's cutting off on small screens
- Use your email platform's hosted landing page for mobile traffic if embedding isn't working
- Check your website theme's mobile settings - some themes hide certain widgets on mobile
Problem: People are signing up but not downloading the lead magnet
Solution:
- Check your welcome email - is the download button/link clearly visible and clickable?
- Make sure the download link is near the TOP of the email, not buried at the bottom
- Test on mobile - many people check email on their phones first
- Use a button instead of a text link for better visibility
- Send a follow-up email after 24 hours: "Did you get your [lead magnet]? Here's the link again"
Problem: I hit my email platform's subscriber limit
Solution:
- Mailchimp free plan limits you to 500 subscribers - upgrade to paid plan or switch platforms
- Clean your list regularly - remove unengaged subscribers who haven't opened in 6+ months
- Most platforms charge based on subscriber count - budget for growth
- ConvertKit and ActiveCampaign start at $29/month for 1,000 subscribers
Problem: I'm getting spam signups or fake email addresses
Solution:
- Enable double opt-in (requires subscribers to confirm via email before being added)
- Add a simple CAPTCHA to your form if your platform supports it
- Regularly clean your list and remove obviously fake emails (asdf@asdf.com, etc.)
- Don't worry about a few fake signups - it's normal. Focus on the real subscribers
Problem: Should I use single opt-in or double opt-in?
Solution:
- Single opt-in: Subscriber gets added immediately = more signups, but lower quality
- Double opt-in: Subscriber must confirm via email = fewer signups, but higher quality and better deliverability
- Recommendation: Use single opt-in to start. Switch to double if you get lots of spam or low engagement
- In EU countries, double opt-in is often required for GDPR compliance
Problem: How do I know if my lead magnet is actually working?
Solution - Track These Metrics:
- Conversion rate: Aim for 2-5% of website visitors signing up
- Welcome email open rate: Should be 40-60% (much higher than regular emails)
- Download rate: 70-90% of subscribers should download within 48 hours
- Email sequence engagement: Are people opening and clicking your follow-up emails?
- Consultation bookings: Are subscribers booking calls or purchasing? Track this manually
- If these numbers are low, the issue is usually your email sequence or lead magnet quality, not the setup
Problem: Do I need to worry about GDPR or privacy laws?
Solution:
- Add a privacy policy link near your opt-in form
- Include an unsubscribe link in every email (most platforms do this automatically)
- Don't sell or share email addresses with third parties
- If you have EU subscribers, use double opt-in and keep records of consent
- Most email platforms (Mailchimp, ConvertKit, etc.) are GDPR-compliant by default
- If operating in the US only with US customers, GDPR isn't a major concern
Problem: Someone is copying/redistributing my lead magnet
Solution:
- Your 6-month license only covers YOUR distribution - others sharing it violates copyright
- If it's a competitor, send them a cease and desist email citing your license
- If it's a subscriber sharing with friends, that's normal and actually good for exposure
- Watermark future versions with your logo and website if plagiarism is a big concern
- Focus your energy on growing your list rather than policing sharing - most sharing is harmless
Problem: When should I update or refresh my lead magnet?
Solution:
- If information becomes outdated (law changes, industry standards shift, new research emerges)
- If your branding changes significantly
- If you're getting feedback that it's not helpful or relevant anymore
- As a general rule, review annually and update if needed
- Small updates (fixing typos, updating a statistic) can be done anytime - just re-upload the new version
- Description of the problem
- Which email platform you're using We'll help you troubleshoot and get everything working. Branded Plus customers get priority support with faster response times.
